The SPE Netherlands Section (SPE-NL) is proudly organizing a CCS workshop on the 15th of May 2024 in The Netherlands, with the theme: "Recent CCS development advances and insights." It is anticipated that the entire Dutch CCS community will attend this event. The SPE-NL Underground Hydrogen Storage workshop hosted on the 15th of February 2024, in The Netherlands, was a great success with over 100 energy professionals attending this event. We expect a similar turnout for this pinnacle CCS event.
Abstract
The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) is hosting a pivotal one-day workshop in the Netherlands, centered on Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in the North Sea. This workshop is designed to offer a comprehensive exploration of technical, regulatory, and operational facets specific to CCS projects in the region. The key workshop objectives include providing a detailed understanding of the ongoing technical work within the North Sea, examining the convergence and divergence between industry and university research in CCS, and dissecting integrated models used in the regulatory and operational realms. The workshop emphasizes comparing simpler regulatory models with the more complex models preferred by operators, focusing on their alignment with permitting processes and monitoring requirements.
Highlighting operational strategies, the workshop showcases models like EBN's inhouse model, Calysto. Insights from industry partners on Measurements, Monitoring, and Verification (MMV) processes underscore their significance within the permitting landscape. Further topics encompass storage performance assessment, containment risk analysis, and the characterization of storage sites, emphasizing the integrity analysis of wells and cap rocks.
The workshop narrows its scope to depleted gas fields and aquifers as primary storage reservoirs. Additionally, a dedicated focus on ensuring well integrity for CCS wells will be explored, considering their unique operational and regulatory demands. Overall, this workshop seeks to foster collaboration, address technical gaps, and propel advancements in Carbon Capture and Storage practices within the North Sea, thereby contributing to sustainable energy solutions and regulatory compliance in the region.
