It is with great pride and enthusiasm that we announce the 6th edition of the Women in Energy symposium to be held on May 17th, 2019 in The Hague.
For several years women and men have joined our mission to raise awareness of diversity and inclusion (D&I) themes in the energy industry. Our purpose is to solidify a D&I culture on the work floor and make steps towards equality. By connecting people, we aim to create a support network of professionals in the energy sector for sharing experiences, mentorship and sponsorship. Our overarching theme for this year’s edition will be: 

                                                                   “Women in Energy: Shape the future” 

The oil and gas industry went through substantial changes over the last few years. Significant reductions in the price of renewable energy technologies, coupled with a political commitment to reduce CO2 emissions following the Paris Agreement, led to an increased focus from oil and gas majors towards adapting their traditional business models. Renewables are gaining more prominence in the energy mix whereas the optimisation of energy usage has seen an increased deployment of Artificial Intelligence and cloud technologies. As companies adapt to the energy transition, employees need to adapt as well, by developing relevant skills to maintain their employability.

During the event, we would like to address how the changes in the energy sector will affect future employability, talent retention and opportunities they create for women.

Program overview:

The program will start with two opening talks where speakers will share their experience and views on energy transition and digitalisation, setting the scene for an in-depth panel discussion engaging panellists from different companies and institutes. Plenary presentations and a round table discussion will be complemented by interactive workshops, tailored towards empowering women and men to thrive in their careers, with ample time left for networking activities.

Our aim is to engage panellists and participants in an interactive discussion around:

  • Cultural influence, gender perception and generation differences influencing women’s career development;
  • Career shift, from subsurface domain knowledge to hybrid, and how to not get stuck in the career ladder;
  • Leveraging gender traits in career development and progression; and
  • Need for diversity to drive innovation.

Workshops:

     1. RE-discover Your Career Path by Janneke van Baalen
Given the energy transition, your working environment will probably change. You will have to reinvent yourself, move in a different direction, which could range from a small shift in your role, your work field or your responsibilities, to a big change implying a total career change. In any case, whether it involves big or small adjustments, you will have to prepare yourself for the future. This workshop is an invitation to rediscover yourself, to grow and to move in a direction which truly suits you.


      2. Keeping Up Personal Energy by Yep Trainingen
Everybody knows them: those moments where a healthy workload collides into work-stress. How do you tackle that? When is it time to take a step back? In this workshop we will gain insight into our stress levels, we will partake in conversations about situations which cause stress and we will share tips and tricks. In this active workshop we will get insights into our time-management skills, indicating our own limits and mapping that into work & life balance, to get one step closer to a more balanced lifestyle.


      3. Dare to Ask: Network with Purpose by Aletta Filippidou
How effective is your network right now? Who can support you to achieve your goal, whatever that may be? What can you do to stop dreading going to a professional event and feeling “obliged to network”? Understanding your current network, building it solid and maintaining it, is an essential skill in a professional environment. In this practical and interactive workshop, we will establish an understanding about the value and power of your current network by mapping it. You will also learn a range of personality- and purpose- dependent ways to make contact with others and how to successfully promote yourself and your goal while maintaining your values and authenticity.

      4. From a Struggling Leader, to a Confident Leader
by Noa Brume
Women can be great leaders. So why do so many of us refrain from being seen as leaders, or when we do, we don’t feel comfortable in our “leader’s shoes”? There’s an explanation of and a solution to that, says our guest-trainer Noa Brume. In this interactive and inspiring workshop, Noa will explain what to look for and what to connect to when in a position of leadership and how to connect to the leader inside us. Participants will end up with a personal unique “picture” of the things they should focus on when leading, so if ever questioning themselves or their leadership, they can quickly refocus and reconnect.


      5. Change Your Lens
by Merlijn Kutsch Lojenga
We give meaning to the world by our own frames and context. Our vision controls our perception and our perception changes our individual and organizational reality. By design, our vision, and hence our organizations, have blind spots. These blind spots are based on our individual and collective habits of thoughts. Via a number of interactive exercises, we will explore our own frames and set a first step to see new future possibilities!

About Women In Energy:

The SPE Netherlands section is the co-organizer of the WIE symposia which supports the SPE mission to collect, disseminate and exchange technical knowledge concerning the exploration, development and production of oil and gas resources and related technologies for the public benefit. Concurrently it provides opportunities for professionals to enhance their technical and professional competences. WIE Symposia brings together a diverse audience to promote the importance of diversity and inclusion and highlight the value it brings to a successful business.  Our ambition is to create a platform that members as well as business leaders can use to help address and tackle gender disparity as well as promote higher participation of women across different ranks. We hope to encourage the sharing of best practices on how to create equal career opportunities and to close the gender and talent gaps still present across all levels in the oil and gas industry.
Since 2011 four symposia have been organized with more than 500 attending participants including prominent speakers from across the industry, academia and politics.  Symposiums have also hosted panel discussions and soft skill workshops where participants could share their views on the different topics and gain practical skills to help them develop their talent and accelerate their careers.
Many industry leaders and professional organizations have joined us on our journey to bring awareness of diversity and inclusion to employers and professionals across all sectors of the oil and gas industry. With their support this event is growing every year making the WIE symposia a well-known platform for all participants to share their experiences and develop their network.
